🧪 Understanding the Innovation

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials known for their remarkable optical, electronic, and surface functionalization properties. They have gained attention in bioimaging, biosensing, and photothermal therapy. However, their application in photodynamic therapy (PDT) remains limited due to low singlet oxygen (¹O₂) quantum yield, poor solubility, and biocompatibility challenges.


🔬 The Scientific Breakthrough

In this keynote session, halogen-decorated graphene quantum dots (X@GQDs) are presented as an advanced nanoplatform for oncological applications.

Special focus is given to fluorine-doped graphene quantum dots (F@GQDs), engineered to enhance photodynamic performance.

Key features include:

  • Particle size below 3 nm
  • ~2% fluorine doping
  • Improved water solubility
  • Enhanced biocompatibility
  • Strong green fluorescence
  • Quantum yield slightly above 13%

Fluorine incorporation improves electronic transitions, enabling more efficient singlet oxygen generation — a critical parameter in effective PDT for cancer treatment.


🧫 Photodynamic Performance

In vitro bioassays confirm successful photodynamic activity under light activation. These findings demonstrate that F@GQDs hold strong potential as theranostic agents, combining imaging and therapeutic capabilities within a single nanoplatform.

Professor Paulo César De Morais is Emeritus Professor at University of Brasília and Full Professor at Catholic University of Brasília.
