Revolutionizing Surface Engineering with Smart-Multifunctional Nano Coatings

Presenter: Dr. Mamata Pradhan, JSW Steel Coated Products Private Limited, India

Presentation Type: Oral – Virtual
Title:
Smart-multifunctional nano coatings

🧬 About the Presentation

In the fast-evolving world of materials science, Dr. Mamata Pradhan is redefining the boundaries of surface engineering through the development of smart multifunctional nano coatings. Her groundbreaking work demonstrates how a simple dip-coating technique can lead to coatings with exceptional optical, mechanical, and self-cleaning properties — all achieved through the intelligent design of nano-based materials.

🌟 Highlights of the Research

·         Innovative Fabrication Process:
A straightforward dip-coating method was used to create multifunctional coatings on glass and Ti-alloy surfaces — a scalable and industry-friendly approach.

·         Next-Level Transparency and Protection:
The coatings achieved an impressive 99.6% light transmittance at 364 nm and an overall increase of 5.3% across 360–800 nm, making them ideal for optical and solar applications.

·         Superhydrophobic Self-Cleaning Surfaces:
Through the combination of mesoporous silica (MSNPs) and titania nanoparticles, the coatings reached a water contact angle of 140°, enabling dirt and water repellence.

·         Unique Nano Architecture:
In-situ generated raspberry-like hierarchical particles provided both high light transmission and surface roughness, balancing optical clarity and durability.

·         Mechanical & Thermal Strength:
Coatings demonstrated 5B adhesion, 3H hardness, strong humidity resistance, and thermal stability up to 250°C — ensuring longevity in harsh environments.

·         Eco-Friendly and Scalable:
The technique is adaptable to low-temperature substrates, supports large-scale manufacturing, and is viable for sustainable industrial applications.

·         Additional Case Studies:
Other developments include heat-resistant coatings with low friction for medical devices and scratch-resistant transparent coatings using alumina nanoparticles derived from industrial waste (ESP dust) — a major step toward green nanotechnology.
